The Zalie — A Letter From a Reader

A letter from a reader

At 57, my porch blanket and I have parted ways

Diane Whitfield

I never thought I'd write about a cardigan. But I've spent almost every morning for the last six years on the porch with my coffee before anyone else in the house is up, and for most of those winters that meant wrapping myself in the same ratty throw blanket, because nothing in my closet actually did the job on its own. My husband Tom used to tease me about it. I'd tell him it was fine. It was not fine. It was a blanket with arm holes cut into my routine, not my closet.

First, the confession. I own four cardigans right now that do nothing for me except take up hanger space. Pretty ones. Thin ones. The kind that look like they'll be warm in the store and then let you down the second you're actually outside. So I stopped expecting a cardigan to do anything except look nice in a photo, and just kept the blanket around for the real work.

"A cardigan that looks nice, or a coat that actually keeps you warm. Nobody told me I was allowed to want both."

The morning it arrived. I had the hood up before I'd even taken the tag off.

Then my daughter sent me a photo from her own kitchen

My daughter Emily has a habit of texting me things right when I'm halfway to talking myself out of buying them, like she can sense it. This time it was a photo of her standing at her stove in this cardigan, hood up, looking more comfortable in her own kitchen than I have felt on my porch in years. She said the inside felt like she was wearing her bed. I wrote back asking what size she got. That was the whole conversation.

What happened on our Sunday walk

We walk most Sunday afternoons, the four of us, and there's a bend by the Andersons' fence where I usually start slowing down because the cold gets into my chest and I want to turn back before I say something about it out loud. This past Sunday I didn't slow down at that bend. I actually unzipped it partway because I was warm, which has not happened on that walk since I can remember. Tom noticed before I said anything. He asked where it came from. I told him and immediately regretted admitting the price out loud, because I could see him doing the math.

"My porch blanket has been quietly retired. It did not go easily."

Three things worth knowing

One. It zips, it doesn't button. One pull with a coffee still in your other hand, hood up, done. No standing at the door fumbling with buttons in the cold, which is somehow always when my fingers stop cooperating.

Two. The lining is doing the actual work. It's not just a knit sweater with a hood sewn on. The inside is soft and thick in a way I didn't expect from a photo, and that's the part that actually solved my porch problem, not the pattern on the outside.

Three. It doesn't read as "I gave up." The knit pattern looks pulled together, almost handmade, which matters more to me than I'd like to admit, because "I gave up and wore a blanket" was genuinely my look most mornings before this.

About the price

I'll just say it plainly, because the price is what made me suspicious to begin with.

It is $79.95. It was $319.95.

Three hundred dollars is usually where I start assuming there's a catch. I looked for one. It's sold direct, no department store adding their cut in the middle, and this happened to land during their clearance on the season's stock. That's genuinely the whole story, as far as I can tell.

If you were sat on my porch with me right now

I'd tell you to stop doing what I did for six years, which is layering a thin cardigan under a coat and hoping for the best. Just get the one thing that actually does both jobs. I didn't think I'd feel this strongly about outerwear, and Tom still brings up the price sometimes, but I haven't taken it off since the day it arrived, porch or not.
