The Plaid Cardigan — A Letter From a Reader

A letter from a reader

At 59, I finally found a cardigan that keeps me warm without looking like I gave up

Diane Whitfield

I own more thin cardigans than I'd like to admit, and every single one of them does the same disappointing thing: looks lovely on the hanger, does almost nothing once the temperature actually drops. I got so tired of it that I started grabbing Tom's flannel shirt off the hook by the door instead of anything in my own closet.

That's the part I wasn't proud of. A woman with a closet full of "pretty" cardigans, standing there in her husband's shirt because none of mine actually kept her warm.

"A cardigan that actually keeps you warm, or one that doesn't look like you raided your husband's closet. I didn't think I was allowed to want both."

Then Emily sent me a photo of hers

Emily has opinions about clothes that I've learned to just trust at this point. She sent me a photo from a coffee run, wrapped up in a plaid cardigan with the collar popped, and said it was the softest thing in her closet and that the collar made it "look like an actual jacket, not just a sweater." I asked what color she got before I asked anything else.

What Tom said on the porch

We sit out most mornings with coffee before the day gets going, and I usually end up going back inside for a blanket around the second cup. This past week I didn't. Tom noticed before I said anything, gave the sleeve a look, and asked where it had been hiding. Twenty-two years married and he still doesn't ask about my clothes unless something's actually different.

"My husband's flannel shirt has been quietly retired from cardigan duty. It did not go easily."

Three things worth knowing

One. The collar changes everything. It gives the whole thing structure, so it reads like a jacket you'd actually leave on, not a sweater you're waiting to take off.

Two. The fit is roomy on purpose. It layers over a plain tee or a turtleneck without pulling anywhere across the shoulders, which is the first thing that usually ruins a cardigan for me.

Three. The cuffs and hem hold their shape. Ribbed, not just hemmed, so it isn't sagging and stretched out by the third wear the way most of my other cardigans were.

About the price

I'll just say it plainly, because the price is what made me suspicious to begin with.

It is $64.95. It was $259.95.

I looked for the catch. It's sold direct, no department store adding their cut, and it landed during their end-of-season clearance on this colorway. That's genuinely the whole story, as far as I can tell.

If you were sat on my porch with me right now

I'd tell you to stop buying cardigans that only look the part. Get the one that actually does both jobs. Tom still gives me a look when I mention the price, but he hasn't seen his flannel shirt on me since this one arrived.
