The Arden Button-Up Cashmere Sweater — A Letter From a Reader
A letter from a reader
At 59, I finally found a sweater that doesn't itch by lunchtime
I own four sweaters that I never wear. They sit in a drawer looking lovely and behaving terribly — the collars scratch, the sleeves ride up when I reach for anything, and by the time I have had lunch I am tugging at the neckline like it owes me money.
I had genuinely stopped believing a soft, warm sweater and a sweater I could stand to wear for six hours were the same garment. Then Emily got involved, which is how most of my better decisions get made these days.
What Emily sent me
My daughter has a habit of texting me things with no context, just a photo and "this made me think of you." Usually it is a recipe. This time it was a cable-knit sweater with a note that said "for your collar complaints." She had apparently been listening for longer than I realized.

What happened on our walk
Tom and I do a loop most mornings now the weather has turned, and the first time I wore it out he reached over about ten minutes in and rubbed the sleeve between two fingers like he was checking a price tag. "That doesn't feel like the sweaters you usually complain about," he said. I told him that was the nicest thing he had said to me about knitwear in thirty-one years of marriage, and he did not disagree.
Three things worth knowing
One. The collar is the whole point. It stands up on its own without a single scratchy seam against my neck, and the button placket at the top means I can leave it open on a mild day or close it when the wind picks up off the water.
Two. The cable knit does the talking. It has that hand-finished, textured look that reads as considerably more expensive than it was, without any of the bulk you would expect from a knit this warm.
Three. It is a genuine wool-and-cashmere blend, not a synthetic pretending. You can feel the difference the moment you put it on, and it has kept its shape through more washes than I expected it to.
About the price
I will just say the number plainly, because I think you should be told plainly.
It is $59.95. It was $239.95.
It is a clearance price, not a trick — Aurelia & Rose sells direct, with no department store markup sitting in the middle, and this particular colorway is nearly out. That is the whole explanation. No catch I have found, and I did look.
If you were sat on my porch with me right now
I would tell you to stop buying sweaters that look lovely folded on a shelf and miserable on an actual body. Get the one that survives a full day, a car ride, and a husband who notices. This is that one, for me at least, and I do not say that about much.
